Sacred Heart Community Service

History

Sacred Heart Community Service was founded in 1964, when Louise Benson, then 61, made her first food basket delivery in downtown San Jose. Louise was a faith filled woman who felt compelled to take action as long as her neighbors in Santa Clara County were hungry and in need.

The agency was incorporated in 1972, becoming a non-denominational 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our Federal Identification Number (EIN) is 73-7179787.

In 1987 Barbara Zahner became the first Executive Director. Her vision, passion and determination led to the growth and vitality of Sacred Heart Community Service and, in partnership with the Board, to the building of the wonderful facility at 1381 South First Street. In March 2002 Barbara retired from Sacred Heart Community Service after 15 remarkable years of service. In May 2002 Amari Romero Vorwerk was hired as the next Executive Director.

Poncho Guevara is the current Executive Director. Poncho replaced Amari Romero Vowerk in January of 2006.

It has always been the partnership of Staff, Board, Donors and Volunteers which makes the many services possible.
